Anaheim Chicana- Poem One

I am a daughter of historical roots,
branched throughout Guanajuato and Jalisco.
I am also American.
Watered down by the red, white, and blue.
I was told stories of the American dream
that created glorified distinctions between
my spirit and America.

I am the daughter of a Mexican mother.
Who carries her pride on every purse she holds.
She is enriched with green, white, and red
and entangles herself authentically between
two borders
she calls home.

To you,
I am not a daughter,
I am not American.
Because my roots are spread across regions
you can’t pronounce.

I bloom perfectly in this citrus city
I call home.
blessed with resistance
and flourished in rage.
I am a Chicana,
A daughter in America
